This April we have celebrated the 1st Table Tennis Tournament of the ITP. It has been an amazing event where many institute members have taken part, either as a participant or as a captivated audience. We had four rounds, each of them full of incredible matches and breathtaking shots that will be remembered forever and ever.

After three weeks of thrilling expectation Ish Dhand has won the finals, obtaining the certificate of the Absolute Winner, donning the victory crown, and gaining the honorable title of PingPong King! Congratulations again!!!

Given the success of the first edition, we are already planning a Table Tennis League while we wait for the second tournament!

Many thanks to Pelayo for organizing it!

Happy Birthday Chris!

Today, October 22nd, we had nice brioche to celebrate Chris’ birthday. It is rather cold in Ulm at the moment, with a maximum temperature of only six degrees. We may be in for an interesting winter …

Sweet start of the 2013/14 Winter Semester

The Winter Semester has kicked off. To mark the event, we enjoyed almond pastries from world famous Pasticceria San Carlo in Erice (Sicily).

This was also an occasion to introduce new group members to the well known sweet habits of the Institute. We are very happy to welcome PhD students Pelayo Fernandez-Acebal and Ricardo Antunes, Master students Sarah Pomiersky, Jan Haase and Matthias Kost and Bachelor student Fabian Frie.

Herzlichsten Glückwunsch zum Geburstag!!

We had today a double celebration, as both Sven Lustig and Javier Almeida had their birthday these days. Homemade cakes, coffee and plenty of chatting to combat the frozen temperatures outside…

There was expectation to sample the recreations of Italian classics, like pannacota and tiramisu (to be compared with Filippo’s famous recipe). Santi was unsure that it could be surpassed….

Samples were delivered and carefully scrutinized

Big success! Filippo, you have got a competitor!

Schnee—Snow—-Nieve

We are enjoying quite a bit of snow this winter. Magic scenery around the University.

Who said that Physicists have no style or sense of dressing??

Ahead of the crowds, Felipe has shown that there are also fashion victims in the field! His outfit today is nicely in phase with next season star colour, the blue-Klein. As seen in the catwalks…;-0)

Whoever is in charge of the University gardens, they are doing an excellent job. Look at the pictures, they are gorgeous. And some of the plants are fragrant; it is just a joy to go through in the way to the lectures. Thank you!

Celebrations

Triple celebration today. Summer weather, new coffee machine and Spain in the final of the Euro 2012! We had some Polish chocolate specially brought from Warsaw to commemorate the event.

Tonight we will find out whether Germany will also qualify. That will split the Institute in half!!!

Spring and Chaos

Spring is here. But happiness has been ruined this afternoon. The coffee machine is broken!!! Despite desperate attempts by Javier Almeida and Mischa Woods to repair it, it seems that she is gone for good. What is going to happen now? How long can we resist until a new machine arrives? Is the group performance in jeopardy?
(to be continued)

Javi Almeida celebrated his birthday this week. All occasions are good to enjoy something sweet and Javi brought in a heart shaped chocolate cake to commemorate the event. The striking piece of disruptive quantum technology in the background is some temporary light control scheme we have in place for the afternoon seminars…

Defying the cold, we have organized an expedition to our favorite Chinese place, restaurant Chaussee in Söflingen. The menu included pork dumplings and genuine crispy duck. Jianming took care of the negotiations with the Chef and made sure that we got a non-westernized preparation. It was really nice! We were big fans of the British variation of this dish, crispy aromatic duck, which we used to have at the Mandarin Kitchen in Queensway. In the Chinese version, the texture of the meat is different, less crispy, and the pancakes are thicker, but it is equally delicious!

Chaussee, we will be back…
