My Research Interests

I am currently funded by the Croucher Postdoctoral Fellowship to research under the theme of “Towards room temperature quantum information processing with diamond NV centers”. I mainly study an architecture of quantum processor that NV centres are coupled to the motional mode of a mechanical oscillator. While this architecture allows spatially separated NV centers to interact, the main challenge is to engineer sufficiently strong interaction strength that suppresses the effect of substantial unwanted thermal motion. We have been exploring ways to improve the interaction strength between the NV center and the oscillator, studying methods to cool the oscillator through coupling with NV centers, and modifying existing quantum information applications to implement on this architecture.

In general, I am interested in quantum information processing, such as communication and computation, in hybrid (between discrete and continuous variable) quantum systems. While existing quantum information applications are considered either in discrete or continuous variable setting, applications in hybrid systems receive much less attention. Interestingly, many today’s quantum systems are fundamentally hybrid, e.g. internal and motional states of trapped ions, polarization and phase space of photons. The study of hybrid quantum applications could hopefully bring together the best of both worlds.
